How can coffee be made caffeine free?

Via laborious steam treatment, the unroasted coffee beans are made porous and two procedures can then follow:

– Extraction via solvents, with the steamed beans being caused to swell due to the addition of hot water. The caffeine is removed using methyl chloride, dichloromethane or ethyl acetate, after which the beans are again steamed under high pressure.

– Extraction by water evaporation

Many people still hesitate to drink “caffeine free” coffee because of the chemicals used for extraction. The permitted quantity of the solvent, however, is totally harmless. You would have to drink six million cups of “caffeine free” coffee per day to suffer any damage.

While “caffeine free” might be quite harmless, there are numerous healthy alternatives. Rooibos tea, for example, is caffeine free, contains little theanine and tastes a lot like black tea. Another healthy tea is ginger tea. It has numerous curative properties and is totally caffeine free.
